Some flights are longer than others, so it is very difficult to keep your normal routine, but try. It should help. If you typically sleep at 9 PM, then try to go to sleep at 9 PM. If you typically eat at 5 PM, then try to eat at 6 PM. If you typically go for a walk in the morning, try to get out of your seat, if the stay seated light is not on, and walk to the bathroom a few times. By keeping your normal routine, your body does not have to make as many adjustments keeping it from going into shock or at least reducing the amount of stress that is put on it.
Airplanes and anxiety make the body more tired. It is fine to take a nap or add a nap to your routine, but try not to sleep the whole way. If you have to, bring a puzzle book or a book by your favorite author on a long flight. This will allow you to focus on something and may help with the sleepy feeling. Sleeping through an entire flight is not all bad, but with some people this causes problems when they get to their destination. People who typically sleep through the flight feel the need to sleep when they arrive at their destination. Numerous studies have proven this effect. Not everyone is the same, but everyone knows their own bodies so try to adjust according to what your body needs.
Staying comfortable is also very important. The body does not tolerate a large amount of changes that occur rapidly. A head pillow should help make a long flight more comfortable. Usually airplanes have some, but they do not carry enough for everyone. If you bring one from home or purchase one, you can also be sure of its cleanliness. There are hundreds of people that board the same plane you are on and it is not possible to clean the pillows between every flight. So, to make sure that you get a pillow and that it is clean, bring one from home or purchase one before taking a long flight. Here is another small tip for head pillows. If you try sleeping on the pillow for a week before the trip, your scent will help you sleep on it during flight. This will also allow the contours of your head to already be accustomed to the pillow.
Body pillows are another possibility. You can use them the same way as head pillows. Sleep on it for a week before flight and it should help alleviate some of the discomfort of a long flight. A blanket that you are used to using will also help in much the same way. Your comfort level increases anytime you are reminded of home or at least most people’s do. So, anything you can bring from home that you usually use for comfort, should be brought if you are aboard a long flight. The more comfortable you are the better your chances for lowering anxiety and reducing the chance for sicknesses like a common cold.
Carry on luggage is another wonderful way to help get comfortable. You can stick it in front of the seat, covered with a blanket, and prop your feet on it. It is an airplane lazy boy. Bet you never thought of a lazy boy on an airplane. OK, so it’s not quite a lazy boy, but it usually helps on long flights.
Most people who take long flights complain because they were unable to fall asleep for varies reason, but most fear flying. If you try one or all of the methods above, you might be able to keep your focus on home and be able to sleep during flight. The main thing to remember is home for making any flight comfortable. When you get really nervous during flight, try closing your eyes. Now picture your own bed, your own couch, or your own lazy boy and you in the middle of it. This should help you feel more comfortable and may allow you to fall asleep easier. The fear of flying is common and usually is the result of a person’s own mental blocks. By tearing down these blocks or at least forgetting that they exist, people can finally get the rest they need. Sometimes this is a very challenging task, but it usually pays off if the person can do it.
For some people, there is no getting over the fears associate with flight, long flights or short flights. If you are one of them, you are not alone. Many people get so afraid during flight they get sick or take pills to avoid it. That is fine, not everyone can overcome these fears. But even those people can help reduce this fear. All you have to do is find your happy place and make yourself go there when you begin to get worried. Anxiety can cause many illnesses and has caused more serious physical problems (like heart attacks), so try to reduce or avoid it when ever you can.
